Preparing breakfast can feel overwhelming, so what do we do instead? We skip it entirely—which isn’t a healthy start to anyone’s day. One of the main reasons for skipping this essential meal is simply not having enough time.

But that only leads to sluggishness, reduced focus, and increased cravings for sugary snacks or caffeine, leaving you with energy crashes throughout the day.

In this blog, I’ll show you the real impact of skipping breakfast on your body and, most importantly, help you find the motivation to make breakfast a priority.

At MentalBeings, we believe in fueling our bodies with freedom and enjoyment! I hope this post opens your eyes to the benefits of starting your day with a nourishing breakfast and inspires you to explore delicious options that’ll have you saying, ‘Damn, I love my life

What Is Breakfast?

Did you know that the word ‘breakfast’ is made up of ‘break’ and ‘fast’ because it literally means breaking the fast from the night? It took me years to figure that one out-eye roll! Now, if you’re thinking, ‘Oh, I knew that since I was like 2,’ well, good for you! But guess what? There are probably plenty of people who don’t know that yet.

The first record of a daily morning meal comes from Ancient Egypt. “Peasants would consume beer, bread, and onions in the morning before going to work. It was typically a heavy meal as they would not eat again until the end of the day.”

Times have certainly changed. Ingredients like these are now often paired with eggs or used in other ways. Today’s breakfast options are much more varied, from muesli, granola, and oats to waffles. And for those who prefer savory choices: eggs, avocado toast, a classic English breakfast, or even a McDonald’s burger can kick off the day

But hey, you do you! If bread, onions, and beer for breakfast like the Ancient Egyptians makes you happy, go for it. Just know that you might be missing out on a world of flavors and nutrition.

Why Is Breakfast Important?

Eating breakfast in the morning helps replenish your glucose levels, giving your body the energy it needs to tackle the day ahead. When you skip this important meal, you may end up feeling tired and sluggish, making it hard to get even the simplest tasks done.

Breakfast also provides essential vitamins and nutrients that you might miss out on by not eating it. Plus, it can aid in weight management by spreading your calorie intake more evenly throughout the day. Interestingly, people who skip breakfast often report feeling hungrier and have a stronger urge to eat compared to those who stick to a regular three-meal schedule.

Regularly eating breakfast can also lower your risk of illnesses like obesity and type 2 diabetes, making it a crucial part of a healthy lifestyle.

Making Eating Breakfast a Routine

Are you someone who skips breakfast in the morning because you’re not hungry? Or maybe you’re trying to lose weight by managing your calorie intake? Well, guess what? That isn’t a valid excuse to skip your morning meal!

Do you feel nauseated in the morning? Did you know that this might be your body’s way of telling you that you need to eat? It’s a signal that something isn’t quite right. Nausea can often be a sign of low blood sugar or unrecognized hunger. If you’re skipping breakfast, it’s important to ask yourself these questions to understand the root cause of why you’re not eating.

Since I don’t have much experience with a lack of appetite outside of my own struggle with an eating disorder, I don’t want to give you any misleading advice. So, here’s a list of some excellent articles that can hopefully help you find ways to incorporate breakfast into your morning routine.

Disadvantages of Eating in the Morning

There’s absolutely nothing bad about eating breakfast. Plenty of articles mention the disadvantages, but those could apply to any meal you eat. Eating in the morning isn’t going to make you gain weight faster, and I firmly believe that skipping any meal isn’t an option. Your body needs food to function. You need food to function.

Last Minute Breakfast Ideas (with recipes I have tried)

Overnight oats

They are perfect for those busy mornings when you don’t have much time to spare. The best part? You can prepare them the night before, pop them in the fridge, and in the morning, your breakfast is ready to go. All you need to do is add your favorite toppings, and you are done. Easy, nutritious, and delicious!

Here are some of my favorite recipes that are based on healthy portions—nothing like just adding a tablespoon of oats and milk and calling it a day!

Muesli and Granola

Müsli from my Müsli

Both muesli and granola are great because all you need to do is pour them into a bowl, add some milk, and you’re done! It doesn’t even take a minute—unless you’re like I used to be, measuring everything down to the grain.

Store-bought muesli and granola can be full of ingredients that, when eaten in excess, might not be as beneficial. But remember, don’t restrict yourself from something you enjoy just because it isn’t labeled as ‘healthy.’ Eat what you like, but do it in balance.

Some great store-bought mueslis:

If you have some time once a week, you could make your own muesli. This is a great option for those who enjoy adding a personal touch and spicing things up beyond the typical store-bought muesli.

Chia Pudding

Chia pudding is so easy to make. I find that chia seeds are pretty affordable, and they form the base for a delicious breakfast. You can take it in all kinds of flavourful directions—from chocolate to vanilla, right through to fruity blends, or even a hint of cinnamon. And it doesn’t stop there. You can use them to make jams, desserts and as an egg replacement.

Last Minute Savoury Breakfast Ideas

I am definitely more of a sweet person. However, these savoury options would be at the top of my list.
