What is the best thing about being in a Hospital?

A Beautiful Sunset serves as a reminder that even during the darkest of times, there is still beauty in the world. A sunset symbolizes that a new day is just around the corner. Being in a general hospital won’t be for a lifetime, there is always tomorrow.

Comfort in Hospital

Have you considered the perks of a hospital stay?

Typically, we associate hospitals with sickness, injuries, and tests – hardly enjoyable. But have you ever thought about the upside?

Picture this: lounging in pyjamas, unconcerned about appearances, still getting paid even when not working, and enjoying your favourite Netflix shows. It’s almost like a dream life, depending on the circumstances.

My Stay In Hospital

In recent years, I’ve been navigating life with an eating disorder. This often meant spending days in pyjamas and comfy bathrobes for me.

It’s kind of like when COVID-19 started, and everyone working from home went for comfy clothes instead of fancy ones. People traded in formal wear for cozy jogging bottoms and jumpers.

That is what I had to do during my stay in hospital, I had to adapt my wardrobe. Fancy outfits became a thing of the past as I swapped them out for loose jumpers, roomy trousers, and sleepwear. Letting go of my cherished dresses and skirts was tough.

At the time of my first hospitalization, I already had a collection of 5 different bathrobes that I wore daily. You can find my favourite bathrobe Here.

I’m not complaining; being comfortable during distressing times is always a welcome relief.

Empathetic Listening

The most important thing you can do if you know someone struggling with any mental health illness is to listen to them.

You never know, but it may be their way of trying to reach out for help, without even having realized that they needed the help in the first place. This type of listening is known as empathetic listening.

For the person struggling, it can calm them and give them a sense of reassurance, it may also have a healing effect.

To listen with empathy is the most important human skill

Stephen Covey

I’m deeply appreciative of the caring staff during my hospitalization, even though I must admit I wasn’t always the easiest patient. Among them was one exceptional woman, whom I’ll refer to as Paulina, a true angel in my journey.

If you are scared or dread being admitted to a general hospital, get a Paulina! She was one of my one-to-ones, that would look after me, during my stay.

She was the only one I could trust and the only one I would share my story with, because she would listen!

The most important thing that you can do if you know someone struggling with any Mental health illness, is listen to them.

Reminder

Try reminding yourself that you are going to hospital because you need help. So if you think that you are not ill enough or that your illness isn’t valid, then think again.

Even if you haven’t been admitted into a hospital, your eating disorder, mental health illness, or your illness in general is VALID.

Just because you don’t have a broken leg or a visible open wound, doesn’t mean that you are not Valid. Even if you don’t have any mental health issues, and you are just reading this to inform yourself, you too are VALID.

Do you see where I am going with this? Just keep reminding yourself of this, and soon you will start fully believing it.
